Detailed Itinerary
Day : 1 - Athens-Litochoron-Serres
Departure to Serres. En-route short deviation to see the village of Litochoro (in the footsteps of Mount Olympus) and visit the Maritime Museum. Time at leisure. In early evening arrival to Serres. Check-in to the hotel, traditional dinner to a local restaurant and short walk in the city center.
Day : 2 - Timios Prodromos Monastery - Fort Roupel - Lake Kerkini
After breakfast, visit to the Monastery of Timios Prodromos (1270) which is considered to be one of the most impressive and well preserved monasteries in the Balkans. On the Greek-Bulgarian borderline is Fort Roupel which became famous during World War II for its defense against German invasion to Greece in April 1941. You see the Observatory, the galleries and the infrastructure that banned Nazis and Bulgarians to accessing Greece from that part of the country. Today’s programme is concluded at Lake Kerkini, southern Europe’s bird watching paradise being home for 227 bird species. After a short cycling ride, you will board into small boats to enjoy 1hrs tour and admire the exciting environment of the lake visit. Early traditional dinner of buffalo products. Departure to Serres. Time at leisure.
Day : 3 - Nigrita Majesty
Today Nigrita will unfold new sets of experiences. To a donkey farm you listen how comes donkey milk to be more expensive than French champagne. To a laboratory of spirulina you gain knowledge about worlds’ natural superfood and the nutritional values of the product. In downtown Nigrita you see the old Houses of Tobacco, being a landmark of the city in the last 2 centuries, the Church of St. George and you visit Gerakina Folk Museum with exhibits from the everyday life of the locals, also see a well just in front that became famous due a traditional song made for an unfulfilled love. Around noon you reach the shelter of the Mountaineering Club (595m) to feel the majesty of the forest, have view to the valleys and try some food especially prepared only for you. Late afternoon you start an easy (cat.2) trekking (1hrs) towards Nigrita, where your car will be waiting to take you back to Serres. Time at leisure in Serres.
Day : 4 - Serres – Cave of Alistrati – Amphipolis - Athens
Check-out and departure to Alistrati to see the Cave which thanks to its rich decoration of colorful stalactites, stalagmites and unique helictites is considered to be one of the biggest and most important in Europe. Next comes Amphipolis where you see the Lion and visit the Archaeological Museum that hosts rare exhibits from Prehistoric to Byzantine periods. You will expect to arrive to Athens in late time of the day.
