Defeating the Gauls (Karpenisi)

The spectacular region of Evritania in Central Greece is renowned for one of the cleanest ecosystems in the world (UNESCO 1991), the unique alpine landscape, the rich cultural and historic heritage, while laying within a thickly wooded and best-watered areas in Greece. Regions’ food specialties include sausages, local pies and river trout, organic prosciutto from black indigenous breed of swine, feta cheese, tsalafouti cheese, trachanas, mountain tea and tsipouro local spirit. Except Karpenisi, the capital of the province a number of picturesque villages, Mikro and Megalo Horio, Korischades and Krikelo, the Monastery of Proussos, Black Cave and more creating scenery that you will never forget.

Detailed Itinerary

Day : 1 - Athens - Korischades – Megalo Horio – Karpenisi

08h30 departure to Karpenisi. Arrival, check-in to the hotel and afterwards visit to the important museum of National Resistance in Korischades village (10mins drive). Last visit of the day is at Megalo Horio where you will have the opportunity to try traditional pastries and local rakomelo drink. Return to Karpenisi and time at leisure.

Day : 2 - Karpenisi (Paleo Mikro Horio - Proussos Monastery – Via Ferrata – Black Cave gorge)

Morning visit to the folklore museum of the historical village of Mikro Horio. Next you visit the Monastery of Proussos, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, being one of the most important Christian Orthodox monasteries and one of the most important pilgrimages in Greece which the foundation is related to the miraculous icon of Luke the Evangelist. Later today, you may explore the natural beauty of Evritania, through the trekking trail M6 that take you up to the famous Black Cave. Hiking into a relatively short and easy gorge, you see small bridges, a 10m high waterfall that forms a natural pool and enjoy a picnic nearby the river. Return to Karpenisi, time at leisure and overnight.

Day : 3 - Karpenisi – Kokkalia – Krikelo - Athens

Time at leisure in Karpenisi until noon. Check-out and departure to the historic Kokkalia, renown for the victorious battle of the Greeks against Gauls in 279 b.C which is considered to be a cornerstone for the European history. Last visit of the day is at Krikelo village where you will enjoy a traditional lunch with local specialties. Arrival to Athens in late evening.
