Serres “The Land of Alexander the Great”
Serres abounds with exceptional archaeological, historical and natural sights. Few of them are the city of Serres, Amphipolis, historical Monasteries, Fort Roupel, Lailias forest, Lake Kerkini and the famous Alistrati Cave. Besides the monuments and the unique colors of this land, Serres stimulate the senses of the visitors with the local cuisine, the traditional products but mainly with its hospitable people. The colors of Serres are unfolding in front of you harmoniously and invite you to discover this place all year round through this cultural journey.
Day : 1 - Athens-Litochoro-Serres
Departure to Serres. Stop en route to Litochoro to visit the Maritime Museum of the city. Arrival in the evening. After check-in to the hotel, walk in the center and traditional dinner at local restaurant. Return to the hotel and overnight.
Day : 2 - Timios Prodromos Monastery - Fort Roupel - Lake Kerkini
Departure for the Monastery of Timios Prodromos which is built in 1270 and it is considered to be one of the most impressive and best preserved monasteries in the Balkans. We then head towards the Greek-Bulgarian boarders to visit the famous Fort Roupel with the shelters and the underground galleries. Next stop will be at Lake Kerkini, one of the most important bird watching paradises in Europe and home for 227 bird species. At this point we go cycling towards the port and board to small boats for having a closer look of the lake and admire the magnificent environment. Our experience at Kerkini gets completed with a delicious meal from buffalo. Return to Serres late in the afternoon. Time at leisure.
Day : 3 - Nigrita Majesty
Today you will explore Nigrita majesty. Visit a donkey farm to hear why donkey milk is more expensive than French champagne. Then, at the spirulina laboratory you will be informed for its beneficial properties, and later on, at Gerakina Folk Museum you see traditional exhibits, a rich collection from the everyday life of the locals, and by its entrance the well, which became famous due to a story of an unfulfilled love that became a traditional song. Continue to visit St. George’s Church, passing by the old Tobacco Warehouses, a former landmark of the town, and you end up to the shelter of the Mountaineering Club of Nigrita, where you will enjoy a traditional lunch only for you. Then, you follow a trekking trail which after 1hrs walk into the forest will take you towards Nigrita, from where you will depart back to Serres. Arrival to the hotel. Overnight. At noon we will go up to Mount Sourpa, the mountain with the thousands of colors, where at the amazing shelter of the Hellenic Mountaineering Club of Nigrita you will enjoy a unique homemade meal with the care and the attention of the people of the Mountaineering Club. Finally, a 1 hour hike in the forest will take us to the town from where we will depart for Serres.
Day : 4 - Serres-Alistrati Cave-Amphipolis-Athens
This last day of our journey you head towards Alistrati Cave, one of the biggest and most important caves in Europe, thanks to its decoration with colorful stalactites, stalagmites and the unique in Greece ecentrites. Last stop is to Amphipolis where you can see the Lion and visit the Archaeological Museum which houses rare exhibits from excavations at the surrounding area. Arrive to Athens in the night.
